About FoodSmart
FoodSmart is a Department of Health approved template that allows different types
of food retail and food service businesses develop their own Food Safety Program.
By answering simple questions about what your food business does, FoodSmart will
construct a Food Safety Program tailored to your business activities.
FoodSmart is a suitable template for a range of food retail and food service businesses.
If you are unsure whether FoodSmart is the right template for your business, you
should contact a local council Environmental Health Officer (EHO) for assistance.
If your business primarily sells, transports or prepares meat or seafood (such as
a butcher or fishmonger) then you must register with Primesafe (www.primesafe.vic.gov.au) who can be contacted on 9685 7333.
If you operate a meat or seafood business within a premises that sells other food
(such as a supermarket), you will need to be both registered under the Food Act
with your local council , and comply with the Victorian Standard for the Hygienic
Production of Meat at Retail Premises (Nov 1988) which can be obtained from Primesafe.
If your business primarily sells, makes, transports or prepares dairy products (such
as milk or cheese products) then you must be registered with Dairy Food Safety Victoria
(www.dairysafe.vic.gov.au)

Your business may also be required to comply with other regulations concerning your
businesses activities. Check with your local council to find out all of your business
requirements.
